ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE:
A collection of works on a theme of mental health.
MIND X MOTION is a dynamic repertory performance dedicated to shedding light on mental health. The evening features the world premiere of “ARMOR”, an exploration of the protective facades we construct to shield our inner struggles.
Audiences will also experience a newly commissioned work by a guest choreographer, Kristen Klein of NYC and a revival of “It’s On Her”, choreographed by Sammi Rosenfeld, which originally captivated audiences during its 2016 debut. This will be Motion X's 7th performance as part of the Atlas Intersections Festival.
Featured Choreographer: Stephanie Dorrycott
ARMOR (premiere) ARMOR explores the metaphorical shield we construct to hide our deepest mental health struggles. The piece opens with a high-energy section set to driving string music, capturing the relentless pace of daily life that often masks our inner battles. As the music fades, the dancers' interactions shift from detached and impersonal to raw and vulnerable, revealing glimpses of the emotions hidden beneath the surface. The work culminates in a poignant group section, symbolizing resilience and the shared strength found in connection with others who face similar struggles. ARMOR is a powerful exploration of coping and finding connection, offering a reflection on the courage it takes to let others see behind the shield. |
Guest Choreographer: Sammi Rosenfeld
It's On Her (2016) We are social creatures–moving with the herd shields us from the lurking dangers. However, those who struggle with behaviors and stories deemed too shameful to share–like addiction, binge eating, and domestic violence–live in a perpetual dance of masking their truth in front of others in order to avoid isolation. The mask becomes their safety, their friend, their confidant, and yet is the one thing blocking them from true connection. Will they have the courage to leave behind the mask already by their side for only the possibility of true human connection? Artist Bio: Sammi Rosenfeld is a choreographer, dance teacher, school counselor for a K-8 special education school, and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. After receiving her foundational dance training from The Washington School of Ballet and other conservatories, Sammi received her BFA with honors from The University of Michigan in Dance with a minor in Movement Science. She danced professionally with such companies as Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company (apprentice), Maida Withers Dance Construction Company, Motion X, and Lyons and Tigers. She received her M.S.Ed from The University of Pennsylvania in School and Mental Health Counseling in 2018. She is trained in many therapeutic modalities including SPACE, play therapy, expressive arts therapy, dance movement therapy, and is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Her work as a dancer, counselor, and special education educator are always interacting and informing each other. |
