Motion X is a contemporary dance company based in Northern Virginia. The company was founded in 2013 by Stephanie Dorrycott with the goal of creating a contemporary modern company that supports the individuality and artistic development of dancers. In addition, Motion X work celebrates real human experiences and explores the space between the abstract and the literal. It’s shaped by moments of chaos and control, often inspired by collaboration with other artists. We believe dance and choreography are forms of therapy—a way to express what people are going through while still protecting themselves from being fully vulnerable. The abstract nature of our work invites interpretation, allowing many people to connect with the themes we explore. Motion X creates immersive experiences that captures fleeting emotions, layered with vibrant visuals and rhythms of color and light. Through choreography, we aim to craft beautiful moving landscapes that encourage reflection and offer fresh perspectives on what it means to be human.
Movement style
The movement style of the company has developed over time and has evolved since its start in 2013. MXDC movers find a deep connection between breath and their extension as a way of expanding the reach of the body vertically and horizontally to new limits. Motion X Founder, Stephanie Dorrycott developed this movement method as a way of bringing the dancer to an more expressive place, artistically and technically. The movement style can be referred to as "dynamic release" and is grounded in roots of classical modern, ballet, and jazz. Motion X movers are technically sound, but have the ability to seamlessly connect movements together using breath, gravity, and momentum. The Motion X dancer's movements appear effortless, but offer clear intention with technical control and strength.

"To say this is “dancing” seems to undermine the power of the performance. The cadence is hypnotic to the point that I stopped viewing the dancers as people, but more as perennial beings lost in an endless metamorphosis." - Max Kaplow, DC Theatre Scene
